Legacy is the first Riftbound set that Riot designed with draft in mind, and the first in which a Legend or Battlefield gets its own slot in the booster pack instead of one card of the lowest rarity (Common). Both changes may increase demand for booster packs opened at the table, and booster box pre-orders are only just starting: more than three months remain until release.
Key points
Riot designed Legacy for draft, and in every booster pack one of the seven Common slots will be taken by a Legend or Battlefield, roughly half and half.
Legacy goes on sale on 29 January 2027, Pre-Rift events run from 22 to 28 January, and Proving Grounds 2nd Edition follows on 19 February.
Riot has not shown a single card from the set yet. Previews start at Convergence Fest from 13 to 15 December and will continue into January.
On the European secondary market, the Legacy booster box pre-order costs more than the cheapest offers for Vendetta, Unleashed and Spiritforged, although on 17 October it had only three offers.

A Legend in every other booster pack and a set built for draft
The most important change in Legacy concerns the booster pack itself. From this set on, one Common slot is replaced by a slot for a Legend or Battlefield card, in a roughly half-and-half ratio. A booster pack still holds 14 cards, but it now has six Commons instead of seven. According to Riot's announcement, the aim is to make Legends available to players who need them while disappointing those who open yet another duplicate less often, since a deck needs only one Legend. In a booster box of 24 booster packs this gives an average of about a dozen Legends and as many Battlefield cards, although Riot gives the ratio only approximately.
The second change concerns the format. According to Riot, Legacy is the first set its designers describe as built for draft. Champions sharing a domain have synergies with each other, and lower-rarity cards act as signposts that hint at which strategy to pursue. Shops will receive refreshed Rune Kits with a new unit card called Minion, which players add to their draft deck the same way as runes.
The third change will be felt by anyone who reads cards. The word "Play" has had four meanings so far, and according to Riot, after the changes it has "about 1.2". Creating tokens is described by the new word "Create", the ability "When you play me" becomes "When I enter", targeting words get a grey background, and an arrow separates an ability's condition from its effect. "When you play a card/spell" stays unchanged.

Six regions of Runeterra and twelve Legends
The set's tagline is "Bear the Banner", and its backdrop is the regions of Runeterra: Demacia, Noxus, Ionia, Piltover and Zaun, Freljord, and Bilgewater.
Riot has announced twelve Legends and revealed eight of them: Ashe, Garen, Heimerdinger, Illaoi, Karma, Lux, Tryndamere and Vladimir. League of Legends fans will recognise two pairs from the world's lore in the four Champion Decks: Garen and Lux, the Crownguard siblings from Demacia, and Ashe and Tryndamere, the married couple trying to unite the Freljord. The other champions represent further regions in the game's canon: Heimerdinger Piltover, Illaoi Bilgewater, Karma Ionia and Vladimir Noxus. For now, Riot refers to the last four Legends only as "four more friends".
For collectors, the most interesting part is a brief mention of artwork inspired by League Classic. Riot has not yet explained which cards will get it or at what rarity.

Cards: nothing to price until December
According to Riot's announcement, the set has 239 cards, 93 of which are Showcase versions. Until the publisher shows the cards, it is impossible to point to the one collectors will hunt for or to calculate a booster pack's expected value, since the rarity ratios are not known either. So far the announcements point to only two groups as candidates for the set's most valuable cards, without naming specific cards: Showcase versions and League Classic artwork. Prices for Legacy singles will appear on our card pages after release.
Four products, four different purchases
The Booster Box holds 24 booster packs. It is the product for groups that play draft and for those who want to complete the set.
The Booster Pack and Sleeved Booster Pack are two versions of a single booster pack. Riot has not described the Sleeved version separately, so for now it is unknown whether it differs from the regular booster pack in anything other than packaging.
The Vault, called the Vault Bundle in Riot's announcements, contains six booster packs, 36 basic runes, four full-art foil promo tokens and a deck box, according to the description from the US shop PHD Games. It is a good choice for someone who is starting out and has no runes yet, and for collectors of promo tokens.
Proving Grounds 2nd Edition is the only Legacy product without booster packs. The first edition came out alongside Origins; what is new is that the starter box gets decks with Legends from the new set. It comes out on 19 February 2027 and contains four ready-to-play decks with the Legends Heimerdinger, Karma, Vladimir and Illaoi, four oversized Battlefield cards, four paper playmats, four chibi-style score counters and a rulebook. It is a product for four people who want to start playing right away without buying booster packs.
Alongside them, four 60-card Champion Deck decks will be released: Tryndamere, Ashe, Lux and Garen. Riot notes that they contain only cards that are also available in booster packs. According to the description from the shop PHD Games, since Riot has not given the contents, each deck comes with a paper playmat, a Legacy booster pack and a folding box.

Publisher suggested prices and the European secondary market
According to Riot Games, Proving Grounds 2nd Edition costs $40. According to the UVS Games product description at the US shop PHD Games, the suggested price of the booster box is $120, the Vault $34.99, and a set of four Champion Deck decks $139.96. At these prices a booster pack costs $5 in the booster box and about $5.83 in the Vault, so with the Vault you pay extra for the runes and tokens.
On the European secondary market, the Legacy booster box had three pre-order offers on 17 October, the cheapest at €149.90. The cheapest booster box offers for earlier sets cost less that day: Vendetta €125, Unleashed €128.99 and Spiritforged €139.99. Only the Origins booster box was more expensive, from €165. With three offers, this is not yet a market price.
