Chaos Rising officially revealed: we analyse the May set for the Pokémon TCG

2026 in the Pokémon TCG isn't slowing down for a moment. While players are only beginning to analyse March's Perfect Order, The Pokémon Company is announcing the next expansion: Mega Evolution - Chaos Rising. The May set brings the long-awaited Mega Greninja ex into the game and continues the trend of small, focused sets. Is it just a bridge between bigger releases, or one of the more interesting collector sets of the year?

Chaos Rising officially revealed: we analyse the May set for the Pokémon TCG

A new stage of the Mega Evolution series: the 2026 release calendar

The Pokémon Company has confirmed that Chaos Rising will debut on May 22, 2026, as the fourth English set in the Mega Evolution series.

As usual with standard expansions, the release will be preceded by Prerelease events, which will take place between May 9 and 17. That is when players will first be able to test the new cards in the Build & Battle format.

In practice, this means the release calendar for the first half of the year looks like this:

  • January 2026: Ascended Heroes
A large set opening the year and introducing the most new cards to the format.

  • March 2026: Perfect Order
A much smaller set, focused on specific Mega Evolutions.

  • May 2026: Chaos Rising
Another compact set, whose main star is Mega Greninja ex.

The trend is clear: a large set to start the year, followed by smaller expansions focused on specific themes. This strategy may also be linked to preparations for the 30th anniversary of the Pokémon brand, which falls in 2026. The Pokémon Company is developing special products and anniversary collections at the same time, so more compact sets may help keep card availability high while freeing up printing capacity.

A small set with a high concentration of rare cards

Chaos Rising will be one of the smallest main sets in recent years.

According to the revealed information, the set will contain around 86 cards in the main set, and together with secret and special cards the total should come to around 122 cards.

The rarity structure looks like this:

  • 5 Mega Evolution Pokémon ex

  • 5 regular Pokémon ex

  • over 20 Trainer cards

  • 11 Illustration Rare

  • 18 Ultra Rare

  • 6 Special Illustration Rare

For collectors, this has several practical consequences:

An easier Master Set
Fewer cards means completing the whole collection faster.

Higher odds of pulling rare cards
In small sets, you statistically pull a specific Ultra Rare or Illustration Rare more often.

Faster stabilisation of single card prices
The market usually becomes saturated with cards from smaller sets more quickly.

Mega Evolution in the spotlight

The most important element of the set is the new Mega Evolution Pokémon ex, which form the thematic core of the whole set. Chaos Rising will include, among others, Mega Greninja ex, Mega Pyroar ex, Mega Floette ex and Mega Dragalge ex, and everything suggests that Mega Gallade ex will also appear among the promo cards.

The set is rounded out by standard Pokémon ex, including Beedrill ex, Gourgeist ex, Cobalion ex and Cinccino ex, and according to analyses of the card list, Krookodile ex will probably appear as well.

The set's main theme clearly references the Kalos region and the nighttime atmosphere of Lumiose City, with clear inspiration from ninja motifs and chaos in an urban setting.

Mega Greninja ex: the star of the May release

The community's attention is of course drawn mostly to Mega Greninja ex, which appears on promotional artwork, product packaging and among the rarest cards in the whole set.

This matters because many fans expected this card as early as Perfect Order, but The Pokémon Company apparently decided to save it for the May release to keep interest in the series going into the next quarter.

The marketing strategy therefore looks fairly clear:

  • Perfect Order: a calmer set developing the Mega Evolution series

  • Chaos Rising: a fan-favourite Pokémon as the main attraction

In practice, this means much greater interest from collectors and potentially higher prices for the rarest versions of this card.

Illustration Rares and Trainers: potential collector hits

As in many modern Pokémon TCG sets, the main collector value doesn't always lie in the Pokémon cards.

The greatest interest usually goes to:

  • Special Illustration Rare

  • Full Art Trainer

Chaos Rising is expected to contain over 35 cards with alternate artwork, which suggests that some of them could very quickly become so-called chase cards on the secondary market.

If the quality of the artwork keeps up the standard of recent sets, it is the Supporters and Trainers in SIR versions that may turn out to be the most valuable cards in the whole set.

Why are English sets smaller now?

Chaos Rising is an almost direct adaptation of the Japanese set Ninja Spinner.

Japan has recently been releasing smaller subsets less often, so English releases are frequently based on a single source set instead of combining several sets into one larger one.

Some market observers speculate, however, that there may be more to it. 2026 is the 30th anniversary of the Pokémon brand, and The Pokémon Company is planning many special products and collector releases for the occasion. Smaller standard sets may therefore be a way to ease the load on printing and increase the number of products available on the market.

For now, though, this remains industry speculation only. The company has not officially commented on this release strategy.

Recommendation: how to approach Chaos Rising?

Given the nature of the set, a sensible buying strategy will differ depending on whether you are a collector, a player or someone following the card market.

For collectors, a good starting point may be buying an Elite Trainer Box, which lets you open several booster packs and get a promo card. After that, the missing pieces of the collection are usually easiest to fill by buying single cards on the secondary market.

Players should above all look out for Prerelease events, which offer an early look at the cards from the set. In the first weeks after release, it is also worth watching whether the new Mega Evolutions actually affect the metagame.

Those focused on the collector market usually concentrate on Special Illustration Rare cards, which have the greatest potential for value growth. In many cases, buying singles a few weeks after release turns out to be the best value, once the market has had time to become saturated.

Small sets have one characteristic feature: the most valuable cards often stand out very quickly on the secondary market, because the pool of cards in the set is relatively small.

Summary

Chaos Rising won't be the biggest set of the year, but everything suggests it could be one of the more interesting sets of the first half of 2026. Its potential comes above all from the popularity of Mega Greninja ex, the set's relatively compact structure and the large number of cards with alternate artwork.

For collectors, it may be a set that is relatively easy to complete while also being very visually appealing. For players, Chaos Rising brings another wave of Mega Evolutions, which may affect the game's meta to some extent.

The release on May 22, 2026 will show whether Chaos Rising turns out to be just an interlude between bigger releases, or one of the more memorable sets of the Mega Evolution series.
