Mega Evolutions return with a bang: is your collection ready?

Remember the XY era? That excitement when Mega Charizard hit the table? If you do, 2026 is going to start with an earthquake for you. The Pokémon Company has officially revealed the cards from the upcoming special expansion Ascended Heroes. And the word "special" is key here: you won't be buying classic booster boxes, and the card count may make your head (and your wallet) spin.

Get ready for a nostalgic trip to Kalos, combined with new additions from Pokémon Legends: Z-A. As players and collectors, we've gone through the announcements for you to see what this giant has in store and, more importantly, what is worth investing in.

A record number of cards: quantity or quality?

Let's start with the numbers, because they are impressive. Ascended Heroes has a chance to break the record held by Fusion Strike. We're talking about more than 290 cards in the main set! It's an absolute colossus.

For tournament players this is a warning sign: it's the first set to introduce the "J" regulation mark (regulation mark J), which signals changes to the Standard format. Inside we'll find a mix that stirs up strong emotions on both sides:

• 13 Mega Evolution Pokémon ex (including the cover star: Mega Dragonite ex),

• The return of Trainer's Pokémon, e.g. N’s Zekrom or Larry’s Komala,

• "Mega Attack Rare" cards: a complete novelty. These are pop-art style Full Art cards where the attack names are huge and... swapped between languages (English cards have Japanese text and vice versa). A nice touch for collectors.

Note: The player community is not unanimous. While the return of Mega Evolutions is being met with applause, the presence of "Stellar Tera Pikachu" in a set dedicated to Mega Evolutions has caused some confusion. Is Pikachu being forced in? You can judge for yourselves, but from an investment perspective, Pikachu always sells.

Product overview: what to buy and when, so you don't overpay

Because Ascended Heroes is a "Special Set" (like Crown Zenith or Paldean Fates), you'll only find booster packs in bundled products. The release is spread out in waves, so it's worth planning your budget.

WAVE 1: Kicking off January 30, 2026

First up are the smaller products, perfect for a "taste" or for younger players.

• 2 Pack Blisters & Tech Sticker Collection: These are sets with 2 or 3 booster packs. The sticker version includes laptop stickers featuring Mega Charizard Y or Mega Gengar. If you're only hunting for booster packs, work out the price per pack. At launch these sets often turn out more expensive than later releases.

WAVE 2: The big hit, February 20, 2026

This is the date you should circle in red on your calendar. That's when the real "meat" for collectors arrives.

• Elite Trainer Box (ETB): Opinions here are unanimous: the box design is great, hitting notes of 90s nostalgia. More importantly, inside you'll find an N’s Zekrom promo card in an Illustration Rare version. That means you don't have to "chase" it in packs: you get a guaranteed hit in the box. This greatly increases the value of buying an ETB at launch.

• Mini Tins: Tins with 2 booster packs. Tin collectors will be delighted, but if you only care about the cards, wait for April.

WAVES 3 and 4: March and April 2026

• Premium Poster Collection (March 20): 8 booster packs and a poster. A small warning here: the community complains about the quality of the posters ("low effort", just an enlarged card). However, the set includes Mega Lucario ex or Mega Gardevoir ex as a Mega Attack Rare promo card. If these cards turn out to be playable in the meta, this product could vanish from shelves in no time.

• Booster Bundle (April 24): 6 booster packs in a box. This is usually the best-value buying option per booster pack (no extra goodies, you pay for the cards alone). If you're building a deck and need the "meat", wait for this product.

Conclusions and buying advice

Ascended Heroes is shaping up to be a chaotic but visually stunning set. The market fears scalpers, especially for the ETB and limited Pokémon Center editions, which is why pre-orders may be key.

Our recommendation:

1. For the Collector: Go for the Elite Trainer Box. You get a beautiful box for display and a guaranteed, strong promo card (N's Zekrom).

2. For the Player: If you need cards for your deck, wait for the Booster Bundle in April or buy singles. With a set of nearly 300 cards, the "pull rate" (the chance of hitting a specific card) will be merciless. Opening packs in search of one specific Mega ex card can be financial suicide.

3. For the Bargain Hunter: Keep an eye on Premium Poster Collection prices. Shops often discount these sets a few months after release, because they take up a lot of warehouse space, and they contain as many as 8 booster packs.

Don't let your emotions (FOMO) carry you away.
